What is a Reiki Session versus a Reiki Attunement and What Can I Expect in Either?

At Niyama our foundation of knowledge and philosophy always originates from the Yogic and Ayurvedic perspective of teachings. Reiki is a spiritual energy, referred to as “Chi” in Chinese Medicine. This exactly what we refer to as Prana in Yoga and Ayurveda. Prana is energy within the body and all living things, this energy moves along meridians or nadis (subtle energy channels) within the physical human body as well as around the body or energetic field. This energy / chi / prana operates at a high vibration which makes it challenging to see, however when energy workers or Reiki Healers are working in tandem with a client they focus on this very energy. The purpose of a reiki healing session is to bring the body back into balance or equilibrium.

Reiki, when viewed as a spiritual energy, encourages this energy or Chi to shift through one’s energy field thereby creating wellness and balance within the body, mind, and spirit. Reiki can therefore be viewed as a holistic healing system for the individual. It is important to know that a Reiki Healer is serving as a conduit for healing, and it requires both the client and the healer to “participate” in the session.

When a client comes for a Reiki session it is important for the receiver to be open to this experience and trust the professional that they are seeing. At Niyama we value not only our Reiki Healers and their training, we also believe in placing our client’s needs and desired outcome first. In an initial attunement, the client will remain fully clothed and lie on a massage table. The Reiki Energy Healer will then place their hands non-intrusively on or near the body. Often, this is left to the healer’s discretion or the desired needs of the client. The practitioner will then move through a sequence of hand positions based on their intuition and respect of the traditions of Reiki Healing. There is not any pressure placed, massage or manipulation in a Reiki session, rather this energetic exchange occurs subtly and allows for treatment of the whole person versus the body part. The practitioner’s goal is to allow client’s body to find deep relaxation and a sense of well-being while at the same time assisting in the own bodies ability to heal and function efficiently.

An attunement in Reiki is something that is done in a ceremonial manner that takes the person who is interested in becoming more adept in healing themselves, or others, to the next level of healing. During an attunement, which can also be called an initiation, the Reiki Healer attunes the client with unique energetic vibrations to provide what is referred to as “spiritual empowerment”; a ceremony that empowers part of the spirit otherwise known as REIKI. This initiation awakens a part of the spirit that was not necessarily accessible prior to the attunement. Once a person is attuned, they will be able to access this “power” easily without worry. One learns how to “turn on” their Reiki and “turn off” their Reiki.

At Niyama we feel that prior to a client enrolling in a training program that one receive an attunement from one of our Reiki Energy Healers. This will become the doorway to the organic methods we use and methodology we believe to be most effective in bringing a body to wellness versus dis-ease. Reiki can be a wonderful tool to use at home or with a healer and we also pride ourselves in teaching our clients how to conduct self-healing techniques at home.

It is very common for our clients to attend our training program with the vision of using this practice for self-healing and not to work with clients. We encourage all who are interested in understanding Reiki and embracing a thousand year old healing modality to attend one of our Level 1 programs.
